Mission & Vision

First Generation College Bound (FGCB) stands firm on its Mission and Vision.

Our Mission

FGCB exists to inspire low-income and first-generation youth to achieve social and economic success by providing advice, encouragement, and support to obtain a college degree.

Our Vision

One day every Marylander will have access to an affordable college education.

Our Values

  • Discipline – We follow through, stay focused, and manage our energy to achieve our goals.
  • Emotional Intelligence – We understand our emotions, read the room, and adjust to build trust.
  • Empathy – We listen deeply, seek to understand, and value the experiences of others.
  • Humility – We acknowledge our strengths without arrogance, admit mistakes, and learn from others. We seek help when needed.
  • Integrity – We are honest, trans-parent, and consistent, even when no one is watching.
  • Resilience – We recover from setbacks, adapt, and keep moving forward under-standing that sometimes you win; sometimes you learn.
  • Respect – We value the dignity, contributions, and potential of everyone we meet.
  • Servant Leadership – We lead by serving others, empowering them to grow and succeed.

First-gen students make up over half of all undergraduates. FGCB helps ensure they enroll and succeed.

Why Our Work Matters

First-generation students often have the ability to succeed in college but lack access to the guidance, networks, and financial clarity that make success possible.

Without support:

E

Many students never enroll after being accepted.

E

Many who enroll struggle to persist.

E

Too many leave college with debt but without a degree.

FGCB exists to change those outcomes.

How We Live Our Mission

FGCB makes a long-term commitment — from early academic readiness through college graduation — including:

  • Low student-to-coach ratios for individualized guidance
  • Early financial aid planning and affordability analysis
  • Personalized college and career advising
  • Support through matriculation to prevent summer melt
  • Ongoing college retention support
  • Rigorous tracking of student outcomes

We are not a one-time intervention.
We are a long-term partner in student success.

Realizing the Vision

Every FGCB graduate represents progress toward our vision — a Maryland where college access is not determined by income or family history.

When a first-generation student earns a degree:

  • A family trajectory shifts.
  • Economic mobility increases.
  • A stronger workforce is built.
  • A community grows more equitable.

That is the future we are building.
