COLLEGE RETENTION
Getting to College Is Just the Beginning
For many first-generation and low-income students, earning a college acceptance letter is only the first step. Staying enrolled and graduating can present new and unexpected challenges.
Just one in four first-gen students finish college — FGCB is committed to changing that outcome.
How We Support Students
From the first semester through degree completion, FGCB provides ongoing guidance and encouragement. Our College Retention Specialist helps students:
Stay enrolled and on track toward graduationÂ
Navigate academic or personal challengesÂ
Meet financial aid and registration deadlinesÂ
Connect to campus resources and support servicesÂ
Build confidence and self-advocacy skills
Our goal: Help students persist, progress, and graduate.
A Continuum of Support
College Retention builds on the relationships formed in high school through FGCB’s College Access Program. Students continue their journey with a College Retention Specialist, who connects with them at the end of high school, and already believes in their potential.
Because college access isn’t just about enrollment; it’s about completion.
Common Barriers We Help Address
Many students leave college not because they lack ability, but because they lack support at critical moments. FGCB helps students manage:
- Financial stress or unexpected expenses
- Academic setbacks
- Confusion around college systems and policies
- Balancing school, work, and family responsibilities
- Feeling isolated or unsure where to turn
FGCB remains a trusted point of contact throughout the college journey.
