From growing up in public housing in Prince George’s County to serving in the Maryland State Senate, Alonzo T. Washington embodies the transformative power of education, mentorship, and perseverance.
Raised by a single mother of six, Alonzo faced significant challenges early in life, including periods of homelessness and financial hardship. Despite those obstacles, he became the first in his family to attend college, eventually earning a degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Along the way, First Generation College Bound became a critical source of support, guidance, and encouragement—helping him discover both his voice and his purpose.
As an FGCB student, Alonzo gained more than college preparation. He found mentors who believed in his potential and a community that challenged him to dream bigger. Those experiences laid the foundation for a career dedicated to expanding opportunity for others.
Alonzo went on to serve 10 years in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he became a leading advocate for educational access, economic opportunity, police accountability, and protections for working families. During his tenure, he championed landmark legislation that expanded financial aid opportunities through the Maryland Promise Scholarship, strengthened renter protections, advanced police reform and accountability measures, and supported innovation through the creation of the Maryland Aerospace & Technology Commission.
In 2022, Alonzo was appointed to the Maryland State Senate, becoming the youngest Senator representing Prince George’s County. His leadership has earned recognition from organizations across the state, including Strong Schools Maryland, the Maryland Association of Counties, CASA, the NAACP, and AFSCME.
Today, Senator Washington continues to advocate for students and families facing the same barriers he once overcame. His journey—from FGCB middle school student to state lawmaker—reflects what is possible when young people are given access, support, and someone who believes in their future.
